Summary: A single night of comfort turns into Relena's lifetime commitment to the children who came of it, but when their father's identity comes out, it's hard to see where other important people in their lives will fit into this strange picture, and if, somehow, they can all become a family.

Can't Have It All

Chapter 4

Relena woke the following morning with tears from a nightmare she couldn’t recall on her pillow. Her throat ached and her eyes were puffy and inconsistent sleeping had left her more tired than she had even been in her life. To top it all off, someone was making a horrible commotion outside her room. Her mind cleared enough to register one of the voices as Duo’s. He was already at the hospital this early?

“I don’t care if you’re her poor dearly departed grandmother back from the grave, you will NOT wake Relena up yet. Her sleep has been erratic at best between the babies and the nurses and everything else. Come back in an hour.”

Who could be trying to see her? Quatre and Trowa weren’t supposed to be back until she had gotten settled in at home, Wufei wasn’t supposed to be back at all, and all of the politicians who would put appearances were too busy getting ready for work to come to the hospital. They would almost certainly wait until she had gone home, anyway. Relena got out of the bed.

“Are you telling me that you expect me to sit out here and just wait until you are ready to let me see my own sister?” a voice demanded. Zechs, obviously.

“More or less,” Duo agreed cheerfully.

“I won’t have it, Maxwell. That is my sister in there, and my nieces, and they are nothing to you, so come to think of it, *you* leave before I have the hospital staff bodily remove you,” Zechs replied hotly.

WHAP! Duo and Zechs looked at Relena is surprise as she stared at her stinging hand like it belonged to a stranger. Her face was pale as she stared at the red evidence her slap had left on her brother’s face. Her voice, however, was low and even. “Don’t you dare *ever* make such a threat again. Duo has more right to be here than you ever did. At least he cared enough to come by and check on me once in a while. I don’t even know where you’ve been for the last seven months. Where were you when I couldn’t do anything but throw up? Or when I was happy one minute and screaming the next? Or when I needed help to get dressed because I couldn’t reach my feet to put on my own socks?”

Zechs was staring at his sister as though he’d never seen her before. Relena was many things, but violent and blunt were new to him. It was this fact, more than her words, that made him contrite. “You’re right, Relena. I know nothing about this situation. It was wrong of me to come in and start making assumptions and demands. I apologize to you both.”

Duo waved it away, and Relena nodded. “Good. Now, come see your nieces. I don’t know if they are awake or not, but you can look either way.”

She led the way back into her room, where both babies still lay sleeping. “Don’t worry,” Relena said cheerfully at her brother’s slightly disappointed look, “they never sleep for long,”

Duo chuckled. “Poor girl. Did you get any sleep at all last night?”

“No, thank you for asking. Speaking of sleep, I thought it was against your principles to be up this early.”

“It is, if I haven’t been up all night,” he agreed with a yawn, “but desperate times call for desperate measures. The doctor wants to keep you in here for at least two more days, just because of who you are. I’m trying to bargain for your release, but I’ve got to tell you, I’ve been in hostage situations that were easier to negotiate.”

“I’ll throw a tantrum later,” she said thoughtfully. “While that’s going on, Zechs can throw money at the doctor and anybody else who protests too loudly while you and Heero sneak the girls down the back stairs. I’ll knot the sheets and climb out a window later.”

Zechs rolled his eyes. “Maybe some credit cards,” he conceded. “At least I can get them cancelled. Seriously, I’ll talk to the doctor. I’m sure I can make him see he’s just being overly protective because you’re such an important person. Leave it to me.” With that, he left to find the doctor.

Five minutes later, Zechs was back, looking put out and maybe even a little frightened. “Duo, find a rope ladder. I won’t have my sister breaking her neck on bed sheets.”

Duo’s face became determined. “I didn’t want to have to resort to this. Relena, you’ll be out of here by lunch time, I promise. I’m going to fight scary bastard with scarier bastard.”

Relena looked at him in mock horror. “Oh, Duo, must you?” she said dramatically.

He nodded. “Zechs, help her pack up, will you?”

“What’s going on? Where is he going?” Zechs asked as Duo marched from the room as if he was about to bravely face the executioner.

“Heero worked all night to make up some of the work he missed while helping me. He’s…grouchy…when he doesn’t get enough sleep,” Relena explained.

Zechs nodded his understanding and started gathering stuffed animals and flower arrangements. “I’m sorry I haven’t been around much. There has been so much to do, and I didn’t even know you were pregnant until Noin told me about three months ago. By then, I was involved in something that required my complete attention, or I would have come to see you. I recently completed my project, and no sooner had I emerged from the last restricted area than I was told you were in labor. Alas, dear sister, but I was too tired to come then. I slept from that moment until this morning.”

“It’s all right. I was worried about you, but I know you can take care of yourself,” she smiled.

“So what happened?” he asked quietly, picking up the little niece who had just woken.

“It was- comfort,” Relena said. “I didn’t even think about the possibility of pregnancy, I guess because it all happened so quickly. Don’t you dare ask if I regret it, either, because the answer is, always has been, and always will be ‘no’.”

“Who is it, Relena? Everybody is speculating who your mystery lover is, but I want to hear about it from you. Who’s the father?”

“Not even you,” she said with a shake of her head. “They don’t have a father, and they don’t need one. I’m their mother, and that’s all anyone needs to know,”

Zech didn’t like that answer any more than was to be expected, but he knew his sister well enough to know that he had to let it go, at least for the moment.

It was less than ten minutes later that a rather annoyed-looking Heero strode past Relena’s door, Duo grinning like a fool as he followed closely. There was no way he was missing out on the fun.

Relena never did get around to asking Heero what he said to the doctor, though she was sure she heard the Pediatrics nurse saying something about not knowing a person could "die that way." Whatever it was, it was effective. Duo was wrong when he said Heero would have them released by lunchtime. After talking to Heero, the staff couldn’t get them out of there fast enough. Relena and twins were discharged by 10:30.
